Ambedkar Nagar District of Uttar Pradesh is a part of Faizabad Division. District Headquarter of this district is Akbarpur. Approximately ninety one percent of the total population lives in villages and their main occupation is farming.

Ambedkar Nagar District was formed on 29th September, 1995. The district was named Ambedkar Nagar in the memory of Dr. B R Ambedkar for his work done for the upliftment of the depressed classes, women and other weaker sections of the society. Total area occupied by Ambedkar Nagar District is 2520 sq kms. As per 2001 Census, total population of the district is 16, 29,353. Literacy rate of Ambedkar Nagar District is around 39.70 percent.

Geography of Ambedkar Nagar District
Saryu River is the main river of Ambedkar Nagar District which is situated at its northern border. Tanda, Jahangir Ganj, Ram Nagar and Baskhari blocks are situated at the bank of this river and these blocks are fully utilising the water resources of the river. Main Lakes Devhat and Hanswar lakes are situated in Baskhari block and Darvan in Katehari block. From these lakes most of the area is being irrigated as a result of which yields maximum crops productivity in Ambedkar Nagar District.

Administration of Ambedkar Nagar District
Administration of Ambedkar Nagar District is headed by Deputy Commissioner. The administrative set-up of this district includes five tehsils namely Akbarpur, Tanda, Alapur, Jalalpur and Bhiti. Further, there are nine development blocks in Ambedkar Nagar District and these are Akbarpur, Tanda, Baskhari, Ramnagar, Jahangirganj, Jalalpur, Bhiyaon, Bhiti and Katehari.

Economy of Ambedkar Nagar District
Economy of Ambedkar Nagar District is mostly dependent on agriculture as majority of its population is engaged in farming and agriculture related activities. However, there are several industries in this district. Sub-division Tanda, which is situated at 20 km from Akbarpur, is considered an industrial area of Power loom. The product is known as Tanda Terikat and is exported to all over India. National Thermal Power Corporation is situated at Tanda Faizabad Road, which is approximately 8 kms far from Tanda.

Tourism in Ambedkar Nagar District
There are several places of tourist interest in Ambedkar Nagar District. Sangam place of Madha and Visui rivers is 8 km far from district headquarters. Here every year on Magha Purnima a huge fair is organized in which a large number of tourists from all parts of the country come here. There is a place named Sihmai Karirat situated at 5 km from district headquarter which is famous as a well know tourist place. Govind Saheb and Kichhauchha Sharif are two other well renowned tourist places of Ambedkar Nagar District.

Ambedkar Nagar District has proper healthcare facilities including several Ayurvedic and Homeopathic hospitals.
