The sky and earth pair is essential not only to the cosmology but to the safety and well being of the mortals on earth, who invoke their help as one would ask parents for comfort. Like parents, they too have been described as being made of food and nourishment for mankind. These divinities that is the sky and the earth are most of the times referred to in the dual, and are alternately characterized as male and female, parents of the sun, or as two sisters. Similar significance is reiterated in the Hymns on Sky and the Earth in Rig Veda.
It has been described in the hymns on Sky and the Earth that these two who are good for everyone, hold the Order and bear the poet of space. It has been said that between the two goddesses, the two bowls that give birth magnificently, the pure sun god moves according to the laws of nature. The hymn says that the earth and the sky are wide and roomy, strong and inexhaustible just as the father and mother they protect the universe. The two world-halves are as bold as two wonderful girls when their father dresses them in shapes and colours. It has been said that the sky and the earth is a mighty pair and they have the capacity to protect all the other creatures from all kinds of evil. The hymn has also asked the mighty pair to give them enormous force so that can face all kinds of situations.
The hymn discuss about a certain belief. It says that the sky and the earth protect the worshippers from the monstrous abyss. It saves from the violent death. It has been said in the hymns that the two among the gods free us from suffering and help the helpless, with the two rotating halves of the days.
The sky and the earth do not move and have no feet. The hymns say that the two young women, true sisters who join in the lap of their parents, share a common boundary and kiss the navel of the world. They two are the wide and high mansions who give birth with the help of the gods, the two whose faces are lovely and who have received immortality.
The hymns on Sky and Earth further say that the sky and the earth are wide, vast, and massive and their boundaries are far distant and who having received immortality bring good fortune and dispel evil. It has been said in the hymn that the sky and the earth has the power to help and offer favour to the worshippers. A prayer has been made in the hymn that the sky and the earth should protect the worshippers from all evil and blame which they face. They should protect the worshippers like a father and mother protects their children.
It has been said in the hymns that the earth and the sky are inexhaustible, rich in streams, full of milk; the two whose vows are pure are milked of butter for the one who does good deeds. The world-halves that are the sky and the earth rule over this universe pour out the seed that was the base for mankind. The mortal makes an offering to the world-halves the source of strength, so that he may walk on the right path, may succeed and so that he is reborn through his progeny according to the law. The hymn says that creatures with various forms but with a common vow have been poured out from the sky and the earth.
Hymns express the fact that enclosed in butter are sky and earth, beautiful in butter, gorged on butter, grown on butter. Broad and wide, they are the first priests in the choice of the priest of the oblation. They are the ones that the priests invoke when they seek kindness. It is believed that the sky and the earth are soaked in honey and hence has the power to soak the worshippers with honey. As a result the worshippers are blessed with great fame, and virility.
Finally the hymns on Sky and Earth ends saying that the sky and the earth are the all-knowing father and mother, work together to bless the worshippers with victory, prize and wealth.
