The idea of choreographers is quite contemporary to the world of Indian films. The concept of choreographers entered Bollywood probably from 1980s. The advent of choreographers was first seen in South Indian films. Prabhu Deva Sundaram popularly known as Prabhu Deva or "Benny Lava" was born on April 3, 1973 in Karnataka. He is a choreographer, actor and film director in India. Prabhu Deva is popularly known as "India`s Michael Jackson" for his fast-paced dance movements. The youngsters till date are imitating his dance and he is also credited as the inventor of several dance forms related to rock and disco steps.

Shiamak Davar is an Indian dancer and choreographer who specialize in jazz. He is known to have choreographed many Bollywood movies like Dil to Pagal Hai, Kisna, Taal, Bunty Aur Babli, Dhoom 2, I See you, Taare Zameen Par and is about to choreograph a Subhash Ghai movie Main Yuvraj. The able actor Shahid Kapoor, also a brilliant dancer has been trained by him. He was awarded the 1998 National Film Award for Best Choreography for his choreography in the film, Dil to Pagal Hai.

Saroj Khan is one of the most prominent dance choreographers in Hindi-language films in India. Born on November 22, 1949, she has choreographed more than 200 films. She took her formal dance training from B. Sohanlal. She shot to fame after her hit dance choreography for the film Nagina`s "Main Tere Dushman". She reached the peak of success and choreographed some hit dance numbers for the queens of Bollywood like Madhuri Dixit and Sridevi for films like Mr India, Tezaab, and Beta during the late 80s and early 90s. She is still considered as the most experienced and senior choreographer of India.

Farah Khan Kunder is an Indian film director and choreographer. She is known for her brilliant choreography in numerous Bollywood films, as well as directing the films like Main Hoon Na and Om Shanti Om. Khan has choreographed dance scores for more than a hundred songs in well-known films such as Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham.

Ganesh Hegde is an Indian singer and Bollywood choreographer. Ganesh is best known for his work in the Oscar-nominated film Lagaan and for his musical numbers in Company. He has choreographed many stage shows, namely Temptations 2004, the Bollywood rock concert which visited America with celebrities such as ShahRukh Khan, Rani Mukherjee, Preity Zinta, Saif Ali Khan and Arjun Rampal. Hegde is also known for choreographing the welcoming sequence of Michael Jackson`s concert in India. He has also choreographed for Michael Jackson himself. Ganesh Hegde has been associated with the Zee Cine Awards since its conception and has been choreographing the Filmfare Awards for the past few decades. It`s Magic from Koi Mil Gaya, Dum from Dum and Main Hoon Don from Don - The Chase Begins Again are some of his best works. India has possessed some of the unmatched dancers of the subcontinent
