The Delhi and Punjab teams earned the highest points in the North Zone League Matches, Ranji Trophy, 1989-90.

The North Zone in the Ranji Trophy, 1989-90, which is known to be one of the premium domestic cricket tournaments in India, saw the participation of 6 teams. All the teams were the regular participants in the tournament for the previous several years and most of them were representing different states from the Northern region of India. The teams included the likes of Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Haryana, Punjab, Delhi and Services. The teams competed with each other very hard for becoming one of the top two teams in the zone and securing a berth in the knock out level of the tournament. However, the North zone saw only the teams like Delhi and Punjab to be able to do so eventually as the teams became the toppers in the zone. The Delhi team earned a total of 83 points and Punjab earned 73 points at the end of the zonal level league matches.

The Jammu & Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh teams played against each other in the first of the North Zone league matches in the Ranji Trophy, 1989-90 and the match was held at Srinagar from 07-09 October, 1989. The Jammu & Kashmir team played wonderfully in the match and earned 24 points from it by clinching a victory of an innings and 61 runs and the Himachal Pradesh team also earned 5 points from the match. The second match of the zone saw the teams of Services and Delhi playing against each other at Palam from 11-13 November, 1989. The Delhi team won the match with a margin of 179 runs for earning 19 points from it and the Services team also earned 7 points from the match. The teams of Punjab and Jammu & Kashmir played against each other in the third match of the zone, which took place at Patiala from 17-19 November, 1989. As the match remained drawn during the specified period of time, the match officials awarded the Punjab and Jammu & Kashmir teams 13 and 12 points, respectively for the match.

The teams of Himachal Pradesh and Services appeared in the fourth of the North Zone league matches in the Ranji Trophy, 1989-90 and the two teams played against each other at Una from 19-21 November, 1989. The Services team earned 14 points and Himachal Pradesh earned 11 points from the drawn match. The next match of the zone was played between the teams of Haryana and Jammu & Kashmir teams and the match was held at Rohtak from 21-23 November, 1989. The Haryana team earned 21 points from the match by clinching a victory of an innings and 31 runs and the Jammu & Kashmir teams also earned 3 points from the match.

The Delhi team played the next match against the Himachal Pradesh team in the fifth of the North Zone league matches in the Ranji Trophy, 1989-90 which was held at Himachal Pradesh from 23-25 November, 1989. The Delhi and Himachal Pradesh teams earned 10 and 4 points respectively from the drawn match. The next match of the zone involved the teams from Haryana and Punjab and the match was held at Haryana from 25-27 November, 1989. The drawn match saw the Punjab team earning 12 points and Haryana earning 10 points from it.

The eighth of the North Zone league matches in the Ranji Trophy, 1989-90 was played between the teams of Services and Jammu & Kashmir and the match took place at Delhi from 25-27 November, 1989. The match remained drawn during the specified period of time and the match officials awarded the Services and Jammu & Kashmir teams 16 and 9 points respectively for the match. The Services team appeared in the next match of the zone also and this time it played against the Punjab team at Punjab from 29 November-01 December, 1989. The winner of the match was the Punjab team with a huge margin of an innings and 163 runs and the team also earned 23 points from the match. The earnings of the Services team from the match were 3 points. The next match of the North zone saw the teams of Delhi and Jammu & Kashmir playing against each other at Delhi from 29 November-01 December, 1989. The Delhi team played very well in the match and clinched a victory of an innings and 133 runs for earning 24 points and the Jammu & Kashmir team also earned 2 points from the match.

The match between the teams of Haryana and Himachal Pradesh was also held from 29 November-01 December, 1989 and the two teams played the match at Bhiwani. The match was won by the Haryana team by a very good margin of an innings and 50 runs and the team also earned 20 points from the match. The Himachal Pradesh team earned 3 points from the match, as well. Appearing in the 12th of the North Zone league matches in the Ranji Trophy, 1989-90, the Himachal Pradesh team played against the Punjab team at Amritsar from 04-06 December, 1989. The match saw the Punjab team winning by a huge margin of 10 wickets to earn 17 points and it also saw the Himachal Pradesh team earning 4 points from it. The Delhi and Haryana teams played against each other in the next match of the zone, which took place at Delhi from 04-06 December, 1989. The drawn match saw the Delhi team earning 15 points and Haryana earning 7 points from it.

The Delhi team played against the Punjab team in the next match of the North Zone and the two teams played the match at Amritsar from 09-11 December, 1989. The match also remained drawn during the stipulated duration and the match officials awarded the Delhi and Punjab teams 15 and 8 points for the match. The teams of Haryana and Services played against each other in the last of the North Zone league matches in the Ranji Trophy, 1989-90 and the match was held at Gurgaon from 09-11 December, 1989. The Haryana team won the match by a good margin of 6 wickets for earning 14 points and the Services team also earned 6 points from the match.
