This college was formed by Late Janaki Ramachandran, ex-chief minister of Tamil Nadu, in memory of her late husband.

Dr.MGR-Janaki College of Arts and Science believes in economic freedom for the empowerment of women. With the hope that gaining knowledge and skills is vital for getting placement, the college started offering career-centric courses. This College works with the vision of establishing thorough educational standards and providing students the support that is essential for living up to the standards and thus enabling them to identify their own potential.

The college is a fulfillment of the cherished dream of Late Janaki Ramachandran, ex chief minister of Tamil Nadu, who wanted to establish a college in the Sathyabama MGR Maligai Campus, in memory of her late husband, Bharat Ratna Dr.M.G.Ramachandran. Eminent personalities like Shri. N.P.V. Ramasamy Udayar (Late), Shri Jeppiaar, Shri N.C. Ragavachari and others had helped her in fulfilling her noble mission.

All courses offered by the college are affiliated to the University of Madras. Dr. MGR-Janaki College of Arts and Science is permitted vide G.O.Ms 431, dated 12th June 1996, Education, Science and Technology Department, Government of Tamil Nadu. National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC), an independent body under the University Grants Commission of India (UGC), also provided accreditation to this college. Undergraduate courses that are offered, include-- B.Sc in Bio-Chemistry, B.Sc in Microbiology, B.Sc in Psychology, B.Sc in Computer Science, B.Sc in Mathematics, B.Com in Corporate Secretaryship, B.Com in Accounting & Finance, B.Com General, Bachelor of Computer Application (B.C.A), Bachelor of Business Administration (B.B.A), B.A in English Literature, B.A in Business Economics, B.A Natya (Performing Arts - Music Dance & Theatre). Postgraduate courses include- Masters of Social Work (MSW), M.Sc Information Technology, M.Sc in Bio Informatics, M.Sc in Applied Microbiology, M.A in Human Resource Management.

Located in "Sathyabama MGR Maligai", 11&13, Durgabai Deshmukh Road, Chennai 600028, it lies in the proximity of renowned institutes, namely- the Indian Institute of Technology, Central Leather Research Institute, Anna University, Malar Hospitals, Kalashetra, PGIMS, Dr. Dharmambal Government Polytechnic for Women, Tamil Nadu Government Music College, Cancer Institute, The Voluntary Health Services, Theosophical Society, M.S. Swaminathan Research Foundation, Tamil Nadu Dr. Ambedkar Law University, Andhra Mahila Sabha etc. All facilities like shops, post offices and banks are within a walking distance.

Dr. MGR-Janaki College of Arts and Science library houses a huge hall with rich resources. In fact it has a stock of more than forty thousand books and also can access over three hundred journals. In addition all the departmental libraries too are well resourced. Photocopying facility is of great help to the students and staff members. Sophisticated Computer Centres of Dr. MGR-Janaki College of Arts and Science are three in number, housing over 200 computers with latest software and dedicated Internet connection. It also has a microprocessor and digital laboratory.

The college has well stocked equipped Laboratories for subjects such as Microbiology, Biochemistry, Bio Informatics and Psychology. Seminar and examination halls are equally equipped. Also for facilitating sports like football, volleyball, shuttle badminton etc., motivation is provided to the students. There is also a hub that offers 24-hour Internet browsing facility. A canteen serving snacks and healthy food also is beneficial for the students.

Apart from academics, students are motivated to participate in a handful of cultural items and competitions, organised at intercollegiate level. Besides academic courses, the college curriculum incorporates special courses in sports like karate, gymnastics, yoga, athletics, dancing, football, throwball and badminton. In order to create social awareness amongst the students, the college also has opened up wings of Rotaract, N.S.S, and Junior Red Cross Units. Special literacy camps, adult education programme and health camps are conducted in the neighbourhood villages by the N.S.S. Red Cross Society organises blood donation camps on a regular basis. For making students conscious about the upcoming issues, experts from different fields are invited to held conversation with the students. In Social Ethics classes, value education and learning is imparted to the students. Furthermore, students are also encouraged to make themselves involved in several departmental and cultural clubs. Students of Dr. MGR-Janaki College of Arts and Science take part in inter-departmental and inter-collegiate cultural competitions with exuberance, thus showcasing their talents and potential. "Sprout" is a college magazine that is published every year. Every department conducts seminars for encouraging sharing of information. Not only that, students are also encouraged to participate in workshops and conferences that is organised by other reputed institutions and also is boosted to present papers there. Fifteen endowment prizes have been instituted by the management and well wishers of the college, to be presented to the students excelling in various fields.

Special mention may be made of the career guidance programme that is offered to the students for helping them to chalk out their future career planning in a more systematic manner. Through campus interviews students are also placed in companies and organisations as well. Dr.MGR-Janaki College had its Alumnae Association formed in 1999, just 3 years after the establishment of the college itself, with the aim to keep alive memories of college days, its ideals and values and to establish a link amongst the alma maters that are now settled in various parts pf the world.
