Synopsis of the Indian movie `Mohabbatein`
The Indian movie `Mohabbatein` is set at the background of a small town where there is a study center named `Gurukul` is present. The story proceeds in a light mode where three young men arrive at a train station during a night, they are all joining a famous and prestigious private school in India, `Gurukul`. All of three share an intimate friendship.
Gurukul is run by Narayan Shankar who is the head there. He teaches all the rules and regulations of life with utmost commitment. He cherishes values and imparts them to his students with great warmth and intensity. He is very strict disciplinarian who believes his institute runs because of his principles, rules and disciplines. Apparently the students are picked from universities all over the country to study further in Gurukul and the headmaster had high expectations from them. There`s only one thing that he does not tolerate, does not profess, does not believe in, and that`s, love. He has instituted a strict anti-romance policy. Students are there to learn, he says, not to party and flirt. Students who become romantically involved will be expelled from `Gurukul`.
The three of them all have their hearts set on different girls. Sameer played by Jugal Hansraj works in a cafe and is in love with his childhood friend Sanjana played by Kim Sharma. Unfortunately for Sameer, she has a boyfriend. Vikram played by Uday Chopra accidentally bumps into Ishika played by Shamita Shetty when he catches her stealing apples from the Gurukul gardens, and falls in love at first sight. Karan played by Jimmy Shergill sees Kiran played by Preeti Jhangiani on a hill when he is waiting for a train. Kiran is married to an Army Officer who never returned from war, yet she holds hope that he is alive.
But they all give up hope of taking their romance to the next level, for the fear of Narayan Shankar and his stern ways. Gradually they start accepting that their relationship is probably doomed from the first level as they do not want to get expelled. Just at that time a music teacher steps as their savior. He is Raj Aryan played by Shahrukh Khan. He comes to `Gurukul` with flowers and violin in his hand, who wants to join as a music teacher. At first Narayan Shankar remains against to it but after some reluctance, he allows Raj to join the institute.
Raj Aryan teaches music, spreads the message of love amongst the three students, and encourages them to follow their hearts and fall in love. Raj Aryan tells the three students that he once loved a woman but she died an untimely death, but he continues to love her. We also get a glimpse of the girl Megha played by Aishwarya Rai very often. She is actually in Raj`s imagination who still comes alive and speaks to him when he is alone.
The three boys fall in love and the relationship between the headmaster and the music teacher begins to become strained. Narayan Shankar is aware of the fact that Raj is doing against to his wishes. Much to the chagrin of the headmaster, Raj begins to implement many changes. As for examples hosting parties, inviting girls from the nearby girls hostel, celebrating festivals and encouraging students to break the strict rules and many more.
Kake played by Anupam Kher runs a cafe in the city and is seen trying to impress the local garment shop owner Preeto played by Archana Puransingh. This part is the lighter side wholewhich runs throughout the movie. General Khanna played by Amrish Puri, Aayush played by Parvez Dastur and Bhabhi played by Shefali Chhaya. All of them are co-stars playing Kiran`s family. Helen appears in a guest role, as Miss Monica who is the girls hostel`s head mistress. She also performes in one of her previous song.
In the second part of the film it is revealed that, Raj was once a student in Gurukul, and the girl he fell in love with was none other than Narayan Shankar`s daughter, Megha. When Narayan found out he banned them from seeing each other, expelled the boy without seeing him, and distanced himself from his daughter. She became upset and ultimately committed suicide by throwing herself out of the window. Shankar was having only one daughter in his life and after that he is living alone in this whole world. This tragic experience inspired Raj to spread love throughout Gurukul, and one day reach out to Narayan Shankar and show him to magic of love and affection. When Narayan Shankar realises that Raj is the same boy who was in love with his daughter, he pulls all stops to remove him from the institute and destroy his plans. Raj continues to help the three boys and their lovers to meet against school rules and the story turns into war between Raj Aryan and Narayan Shankar. After many events and songs, eventually, Narayan Shankar realises that love and change are indeed important parts of life that can make many changes in life. As a result Gurukul is transformed into a singing, dancing and loving school. Narayan Shankar also forgives Raj and say him sorry about his rudeness towards love. Raj tells him that he still feels Megha and teaches him the procedure to see her. Narayan Shankar closes his eyes and sees his daughter talking to him. The film has a happy ending.
