The original name of Soorya Krishnamoorthy is Natarajan Krishnamoorthy.He was born on 11th of April 1951, in Kottayam District of Kerala. He came off a family of famous Engineers, belonging to the erstwhile Travancore State. His father was T. Nataraja Pillai who was the Chief Engineer of Kerala.Her mother, C. Saraswathi Amma, served as an active member of the Gandhi peace foundation. He received his early education from Model High School, Trivandrum. He passed his Pre-degree course from Government Arts College Trivandrum in the year 1967.During this time winning with a record majority of votes in Kerala University, he became the secretary general of the College Union. He graduated in Engineering, from TKM college of Engineering, Kollam, in 1971. He represented Kerala State and Kerala University for Badminton in his college days.
He started his professional career as a scientist and engineer of Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) in 1972 where he got the chance to work under the eminent scientists like- Bharat Ratna A. P. J. Adbul Kalam, C. R. Sathya, Padmashri M. R. Kurup, Padmashri Dr. V. R. Gowarikar, Padmashri.and S. Srinivasan. He took voluntary retirement from Indian Space Research Organization after working 27 years. Later on he gave attention on cultural activities.
Soorya Krishnamoorthy founded the SOORYA Stage and Film Society, the biggest ever cultural society in Asia and also the Best run society in Indian subcontinent. Soorya Society has its networks in 20 countries across the world including Singapore, Malaysia, London (U.K), Manchester (U.K), Zurich (Switzerland), Vienna (Austria), Rome (Italy), Koln (Germany), Dublin (Ireland), Bahrain, Kuwait, Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Muscat, Doha, and Saudi Arabia. Soorya`s main aim is to spread the rich Indian Culture all over the world and attain "Integration through Culture". Soorya recently celebrated the 30th year of its committed service for the cause of dissemination of art and culture.
SOORYA Stage and Film Society organizes the 75 day long SOORYA festival in Kerala.It is the longest festival in Asia. The main objectives of Soorya are-showing good films and retrospective of eminent film directors, organizing discussions on films. Besides, this society organizes classic music and dance conferences, theatre shows, Exhibition of painting, photography, handicrafts etc. It also presents many stage shows on mass awareness. Soorya Krishnamoorthy promote new performer in various fields.
Soorya Krishnamoorthy led the way of Light and Sound show in Malayalam. He was also the inventor of First ever-mobile Light and Sound Show. He started a new theatrical art form named "THEATRE OF FREEDOM" thirty years ago.
Soorya Krishnamoorthy organized numerous stage shows. He also scripted, choreographed and directed those shows. The major shows are- inaugural function of the National Games 1988 with 7000 artistes, the valedictory function of the National Games 1988 with 3000 artistes, the inaugural function of the International Video Film Festival in 1996, the celebration 50th year of Indian Independence in 1997, the valedictory functions and cultural programmes of the International Film Festival 1997, valedictory functions and cultural programmes of the 1998, International Film Festival held in New Delhi, the function south African National Day and Birthday celebrations of Nelson Mandela, `Geethamanjari` a big show with 1000 artists paying homage to 7 maestros of Malayalam Film music in 2001, a Mega Stage Show "Impressions" for the inaugural function of "People News Channel" of Kairali TV in 2005, "Incredible Kerala" a Mega Stage Show with 200 Folk artistes of Kerala in Kochi in 2005 organized by the Department of Industries, Govt. of Kerala, a multi star, multi level, multi media stage show "Chalanam" for the year of Kerala Piravi in 2005, the mega stage show for Sri.M.T Vasudevan Nair and Indiavision Television `UPAHAARAM` on the Musical Legends Naushad and Baburaj in 2006, a mega stage show with 300 folk artists `NATTARAGUKAL` - A journey through the film music of K. Rhagavan Master and ancient arts of kerala which influenced him, to make the mega show `NAMASTHE 2006` on National Integration for the Inauguration of the Bharat Television Channel.
Soorya Krishnamoorthy has brightened the name of Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala in the Indian cultural map. During Soorya India Festival Thiruvananthapuram becomes the Cultural hub of India. He also highlighted Kerala tourism by his various cultural activities. So far he headed several chair .He was appointed as the chairman of the-Kerala State Film Development Corporation, John Abraham Film Awards Jury in 2006 , Jury of P.Padmarajan Award and Asianet Film Awards. Apart from that he was also member of the- National Film Award jury, NFDC Script Committee, Doordarshan Advisory Committee, Expert Committee of the Department of Culture, Govt.of India ,Kerala State Chalachithra Academy etc.
Soorya Krishnamoorthy`s hobby is Ganesh collection. He has about one thousand idols and paintings of God Ganesh including three centuries old Ganesh, presented by the Maharaja of Travancore.
For his work in art and cultural arena he won several awards including President of India`s National Award for Stage Craft and Direction in 1996, MAN OF THE YEAR in 2003 from Limca Book of Records,"KALAIMAMANI" Award in 2006 from Tamilnadu Government.
