King Sri Sanjaya in the eighth century is the founder of Mataram Kingdom or Sanjaya Dynasty. His name was discovered in a Sanskrit inscription carved in stone found at the foot of Ukir hill, in Indonesia
The inscription affirms that emperor Sanjaya was a dedicated devotee of Shaivism. His rival was Buddhists of the Sailendras. The Sailendras was forced to move eastward by Sanjaya.
Sanjaya was also known as Rakai Mataram or Sang Ratu Sanjaya. The title rakai means `lord of` specifies any members of nobility from a king to a simple squire.
According to the legends it is said that Sanjaya was forced to be the king after his father Sannaha to save the kingdom from destruction.
