Jajali

Jajali is the teacher of the Atharva Veda and a student of Pathya. Jajali is also a Brahman, who is mentioned in the Mahabharata as having acquired ascetism by supernatural power of locomotion. Jajali was so proud of this power that he considered himself to be perfect in virtue and superior to all men.

Once, Jajali was doing a standing meditation. Jajali was so deep in meditation that he could not feel that a pair of birds made their nest in his hair. Time passed and a time came when the bird laid eggs on the hair of Jajali. The eggs were hatched and young birds learnt flying but Jajali still remained motionless. At last, one day the birds flew away from the hair of Jajali. Then only, Jajali went to the sea to take bathe. He proclaimed to the sea that there is nobody on this earth more knowledgeable than him. Then, a voice from the sky told Jajali that he was inferior to Tuladhara, who is a Vaishya and a trader. So, Jajali went to the Tuladhara and learnt wisdom from him as his disciple. Later, Jajali went to heaven.
