Cemeteries of Kolkata are the eyewitness of history, rise and fall of many empires and the conversion of a small village in eastern India to the capital city of India in a popular tag "City of Joy". Some of the cemeteries of Kolkata are Bhawanipur Cemetery, South Park Street Cemetery, Scottish Cemetery, Tollygunge Cemetery, Tiretta Cemetery and Maniktala Christian Cemetery and St Stephen"s Cemetery.
Bhawanipur Cemetery
Bhowanipur Cemetery was situated at the Bhawanipur Road of Alipur section, established in 1907, by the British Government in India for the soldiers of Common wealth Wars.
South Park Street Cemetery
South Park Street Cemetery is located on Mother Teresa Sarani, Kolkata. This cemetery is now not in use. But it is a popular destination among tourists to explore British architectural splendour. The road used to be called Park Street and prior to that Burial Ground Road. It is protected by the Archaeological Survey of India.
Scottish Cemetery
Scottish Cemetery was established in 1820 catering to the specific needs of the large Scottish population in the Kolkata area. The graves including soldiers, missionaries, jute traders and businessmen, who were attached to numerous enterprises in the area such as the headquarters of the British East India Company, and the administration of the British empire in India. Scottish Cemetery was utilised until the 1940s but was abandoned in the 1950s and neglected following India`s independence in 1947. Well over 90% of those buried bear recognisably Scots names such as Anderson, McGregor, Campbell and Ross.
Lower Circular Road Cemetery
General Episcopal Cemetery better known as Lower Circular Road Cemetery, is now an active grave, but also it attracts many people because there are the graves of the famous men in Bengali Renaissance period. Lower Circular Road Cemetery was established on 1840 and is still operating as a functional cemetery.
Maniktala Christian Cemetery
It is famous for the grave of Toru Dutt. This cemetery is behind the Maniktala leprosy hospital with the entrance to the left of the hospital. The Champak trees are heavy with the cream-and-white blooms as bright as stars under the dark monsoon sky. It is an ideal setting for Toru Dutt who waxed eloquent about the moon peeping through the bamboo grove and the white lotus turning into a cup of silver under its gaze.
Tiretta Cemetery
This cemetery is now only in the old photos of Kolkata. It was the French cemetery of British era in the first phase, now where Teritta Bazar is located.
