Kalidasa Academy located at Ujjain has been constructed by the Government of Madhya Pradesh in memory of the great poet Kalidasa.

Kalidasa Academy, Ujjain, Madhya PradeshThe Kalidasa Academy has been built by the department of culture of the Government of Madhya Pradesh in memory of the great poet Mahakavi Kalidasa. Kalidasa is known to be the greatest repository of our national heritage and is regarded as the greatest exponent of Indian Culture. The academy has been constructed in the 1978 in Ujjain.

Kalidasa Academy was established for two purposes. The first idea was to retain the memory of the great poet-dramatist Kalidasa. The other was to establish a multi-disciplinary institution, which would project the totality of classical tradition with Kalidasa as its centre. It would provide facilities for research and study in Sanskrit classical and traditional literary thought, tradition of fine as well as performing arts and their adaptation for contemporary times in different cultural and linguistic milieu.

Programs of Kalidasa Academy
The Kalidasa Academy consists of multi-level programme that encompasses academic pursuit and research on Kalidasa, training oriented experimentation and research on the Sanskrit theatre as well as Natyasastra of Bharatal, entire Sanskrit Shastric studies and promotion of classical literary and various art-form activities. Apart from preserving and upholding the traditions lying dormant or lost, Kalidasa Academy also endowers to strengthen, strengthening, re-interpret and reproduce the living tradition in the context of the contemporary needs. The Academy thus offers programmes of academic activities, seminars, exhibitions, play-productions, conferences, popular lectures, training, workshops and recital of classical and folk traditional music. Apart from these film shows, academic research and publication programmes are also held. A seven day Kalidasa Festival is also organized every year in the academy.

The Kalidasa Academy is thus designed to recapture the contribution of entire Sanskrit classical tradition, theatre and fine arts and to represent its unique aesthetic vision to the international community.
