Guru Nanak Khalsa College is a higher education college located in Matunga, Mumbai, India. It is better known as Guru Nanak Khalsa College of Arts, Science and Commerce. It was established by Gurudwara Prabandhak Committee of Shri Nankana Sahib in the year 1937.

This committee runs many educational institutions all over the country.

History of Guru Nanak Khalsa College
This college is one of the earliest higher education institutions in the erstwhile city of Bombay. Its idea had come from Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar who had given a call to the Sikh community to provide higher education to the backward classes. In 1935 Dr. B.R Ambedkar brought in a proposal to the Sikh leaders at Amritsar regarding establishing an educational institution for higher education in Bombay. The main objective was to provide good quality higher education and also to imbibe into the people of the non-Sikh state, the Sikh culture. The Sikh leaders eventually agreed to the proposal and the college was thus set up in the year 1937.

Guru Nanak Khalsa College believes in the Khalsa word of faith that the essence of wisdom is the service to humanity. Its nine-point mission statement is as much a reflection of that past as a vision of the future. The mission of the College is “To impart quality education to students, moulding their holistic development and igniting young minds to foster the spirit of humanism in sync with the teachings of Guru Nanak, helping them imbibe the “Essence of Wisdom” and develop secular outlook becoming harbingers of a new social order.” While it wants its students to fetch leadership qualities to face the global challenges, it also wants them to imbibe self-sacrifice and other moral values as laid out in Guru Nanak`s teachings. The college is affiliated to University of Mumbai and has received the UGC recognition in 1974. Currently Ms. R. K. Patheja is the Principal of the college.

Admission System at Guru Nanak Khalsa College
Merit based admission takes place at the Guru Nanak Khalsa College. It is a minority college and has a Gurudwara in its premises. However the College is not confined to the Sikh Community. Reservations include fifty percent of seats that are reserved for Sikh boys and girls. The rest of the seats are open, and students are admitted based on the cut offs in each subjects.

The college has undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in Arts, Science and Commerce as well as a Ph.D. programme in Arts and Science. Some self-financing courses too have been opened in the recent years leading to the Bachelor degree, one of them to the Master degree as well. These are run on the semester system along with the M.Com, while the grant-in-aid B.A./ B.Sc./ B.Com and M.A./ M.Sc are run on the annual system. The 3-year integrated B.A. and B.Sc. are taught in 6 + 6 subjects; M.A. is taught in 4 subjects and M.Sc. in 5. There is also a provision for M.Sc. by research in 3 subjects. The Ph.D. programme is run in 2 Arts and 2 Science subjects. There is a provision for PhD in Arts and Science. Mass Media, Management Studies, Information Technology, Computer Science, Biotechnology, Microbiology are other streams available.

The college conducts 1st and 2nd year examinations at the end of each term for 50 marks. In the Arts and Commerce stream, at the end of the 3rd year, 20 percent of the marks are assigned for internal assessment in two applied component papers. During the 3rd year, 2 tests, one for each term and a preliminary examination before the final term are conducted by the college. It should also be mentioned here that as per the University of Mumbai guidelines, 10 percent of marks are awarded for participation in NSS and NCC activities.

There are mainly two faculties in the College; the Junior College and the Senior College. The Junior College comprises Arts, Commerce, Physical Education and Science. The Senior College comprises Arts, BMS/ BMM, Commerce and Science. Other than this, there are Add on Courses for Commerce Department (Stock Gyan), Physics Department ( Embedded Systems for undergraduate students, Networking using Net Sim - UGC sponsored and UGC sponsored PG Diploma in RFID & Integration with Automation Systems ) and the Mathematics Department (Certificate course on Statistical analysis and Data). Research programmes and fellowships are also available over here. One of the most notable amongst all being is the RUSA Fellowship. The Placement cell in the institution is also extremely active and currently it organizes a 90 hours training programme for Final Year Students. Other than this, workshops on Career Advancement Scheme are held regularly. The College has also organized Self-Defense courses for girls as well as Personality Development Courses for all students.

Amenities at Guru Nanak Khalsa College
The College has a campus area of 5.71 acres, housing the SGPC run Guru Nanak Institute of Management Studies as well. It has a big playground, the hub of its outdoor sports in which the college has set a number of records. The college has also set records in its NCC performance. It has an active NSS as well. It thrives in other extra-curricular activities too. Its support services include computers in the departments and a newly set-up computer centre, library, a canteen, a gymkhana, a few guest rooms, a workshop, a placement cell, staff welfare schemes and grievance redress mechanism. Medical benefits are also provided to the students under Group Insurance scheme. A panel of doctors visits the college on regular basis to provide medical service.

Extra-curricular activities at Guru Nanak Khalsa College
A number of extra-curricular activities are also held. For this, regular events are organized. Drama, music and dance competitions, Kavi-Sammelan, Mehfil, literary events and other events based on allied artistic pursuits are held on a frequent basis. Many inter-college fests, personality contests, fashion shows, Orchestra shows are also held. They are mainly hosted in the Quadrangle area of the College. The college has an excellent track record of sports talent and the sports facilities as well. Hockey, football, rugby, volleyball, handball, athletics, yoga and several indoor games are practiced. The Sports ground also has a large playfield which has a Volleyball court, Kabaddi ground, Handball court, an arena for Long and High Jump, Shot put and disc throw, a Cricket net practice and also a Shooting range.

A number of incentives are given to the sportspersons of this college. This college is renowned for sports proficiency with the students making it to the international levels like the Asian Games and the Olympics. Most of the students have represented the country in the Olympics and have been honoured with national awards like Arjuna Award and Padmashri.
