Premlila Vithaldas Thackersey, also known as "Lady Thackersey" was an Indian educationist and Gandhian. She was a constructive thinker and a good organizer. Her mission in life was to save the poor and destitute. Premlila always revered Mahatma Gandhi. She considered him as her saint and religious teacher.
Works of Premlila Thackersey
Premlila Vithaldas Thackersey was the wife of educationist and philanthropist Sir Vithaldas Thackersey. When her husband died in 1925, she was 31 years old, yet continued his work, both in the field of education and philanthropy and dedicated herself to the cause of women"s education. The incomplete work of Sir Vithaldas Thackersey was carried on by his wife Lady Premlila Thackersey who donated generously to establish the degree college in Home Science. She became the first Vice-Chancellor of Shreemati Nathibai Damodar Thackersey Women"s University in Mumbai.
Premlila became the Chairperson of the Kasturba Gandhi National Memorial Trust and endeavoured to fulfill the dreams of Gandhiji by working and dedicating her life for millions of poor women and children living in rural India. She was awarded the Padma Vibhushan, India"s second highest civilian honour given by Government of India in 1975, for her contribution in the field of education.
