Vivek Oberoi is a notable Indian actor. He marked his presence in the Indian film industry with Ram Gopal Verma`s movie company. His performance in his very first movie earned him great appreciations and got him the Filmfare Awards. Afterwards he acted in a number of movies and also gained critical acclamations for many of them.
Early Life of Vivek Oberoi
Indian movie actor Vivek Oberoi was born on 3rd September 1976 in Hyderabad, Andhra Pradesh. He is the son of Suresh Oberoi who was pretty noticeable in the film industry and Yashodhara Oberoi. Vivek is the second child among four siblings of his parents. He finished his basic education from Mayo College, Ajmer and Mithibai College, Mumbai. Oberoi was in an acting workshop in New York University`s famed Tisch School of Drama and on the NYU director`s insistence he headed off to New York for a master`s degree in acting. Later in 2002, Oberoi started with his acting career.
Film Career of Vivek Oberoi
Vivek Oberoi did his first debut movie in Ram Gopal Verma`s Company. The movie was a critically acclaimed hit and his performance was applauded by his fans. He received Filmfare Awards in the Best Debut as well as the Best Supporting Actor category. His next films were "Road" and "Dum", in which his performance was appreciated. He starred along with Rani Mukerjee in Yash Raj Films movie Saathiya in 2002 directed by Shaad Ali. The film was a remake of Tamil hit "Alaipayuthey". The film was critically and commercially successful and Vivek gained many accolades. He received Best Actor nominations at various award functions. Next he starred in the comic film Masti in 2004 with Aftab Shivdasani and Riteish Desmukh. He also starred in the critically acclaimed film Yuva, in which he was very much appreciated for his performance. His 2005 release Kaal was also successful. In 2006 he appeared in Omkara an adaptation of Shakespeare`s play Othello which was critically acclaimed in India as well as overseas. He played the character of Kesu based on the character Michael Cassio in the original play. He played successfully against Bipasha Basu. In 2007 he won acclaim for his role as the gangster Maya Dolas in the multi-starred `Shootout at Lokhandwala`. In the later half his other released movies, Fool and Final (2007) and Mission Istanbul (2008) and Prince (2010) didn`t make it big at the box office. He also appeared in another movie of Ram Gopal Verma`s Rakht Charitra which was released in two parts. His other movies include Zila Ghaziabad, Jayantabhai Ki Luv Story, Grand Masti and many more.
In 2011 Vivek Oberoi produced a movie named Watch Indian Circus which was featured in 16th Busan Film Festival and won the Audience Choice Award for Best Film. The film had also received rare reviews from international critics. He was also the judge of the Miss Sri Lanka Online Contest in 2012.
Awards and Honours of Vivek Oberoi
In the 2003 Filmfare Awards he achieved the Best Debut and Best Supporting Actor for his film Company. In the same year Oberoi got the Star Screen Award for the Most Promising Newcomer - Male for Company. The Stardust Awards awarded him the Superstar of Tomorrow - Male for Road & Company. Even Zee Cine Awards and Bollywood Movie Awards conferred upon him the award for Best Debut for the movie company. He was given the Stardust Best Supporting Actor Award for Yuva in 2005. The year 2007 got him the Bollywood Movie Award for the Best Supporting Actor for Omkara. In 2008 Vivek got the Best Villain award for his role in Shootout at Lokhandwala at the IIFA Awards. In the same year he also got the "Standout Performance of the Year" for Shootout at Lokhandwala. Oberoi got the IIFA Green Global Award in 2010.
Other Activities of Vivek Oberoi
Apart from acting Vivek Oberoi is also engaged with social activities. Oberoi serves as the World Health Organization`s anti-tobacco spokesperson. He is also engaged with several charities in Chennai and Mumbai. He sponsored a village after the Indian Ocean Tsunami which brought him the Good Samaritan Award from Rotary International. He also got Red and White Bravery Award in 2006 for extending his help in re-building the villages that faced severe damage due to Tsunami. He also released Tanya Khubchandani and Sandeep Chowta`s government approved anti substance abuse documentary. He is also involved in philanthropic activities like Project Devi, Cancer Patients Aid Association and Banyan, that is engaged in the rehabilitation of mentally challenged homeless women.
Personal Life of Vivek Oberoi
Vivek Oberoi married Priyanka Alva on 29 October 2010 in Bangalore. She is the daughter of Karnataka minister Jeevaraj Alva. They have named their son Vivaan Veer Oberoi, who was born on 6 February 2013. Vivek follows a vegetarian diet and is often enlisted in PETA`s annual list of Sexiest Vegetarians.
