Study of medical science in an organised manner started in Delhi during the later part of the nineteenth century and the beginning years of the twentieth century. The Lady Hardinge Medical College, established in 1916 is considered to be one of the oldest medical institutions in Delhi.

The medical colleges in Delhi offer several courses at both the undergraduate and postgraduate levels, apart from the Diploma, Certificate, Super Speciality and PhD courses. The medical colleges in Delhi admit thousands of students every year from all parts of the subcontinent. The students are admitted through entrance examination organised by the All India and State bodies. The All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) is the most notable medical institution in Delhi and the other prominent institutions include National Institute of Immunology (NII), Maulana Azad Medical College (MAMC), University College of Medical Sciences (UCMS), National Academy of Ayurveda (NAA), Nehru Homoeopathic Medical College & Hospital (NHMCH) etc. All these colleges have already proved their high class and have contributed highly to the improvement and dissemination of medical education in Delhi.
