Piu Sarkhel was born in the year 1965 at Kolkata, India. She has been considered as one amongst the very few female artists who represents the Indore Gharana of Hindustani Vocal Music. Piu Sarkhel`s induction to the realm of Indian classical music began with the hands of her father. She has undergone a rigorous training under her father Shri Kamal Bandhopadhyay. Shri Kamal Bandhopadhyay was a disciple of late Ustad Amir Khan of Indore. He has also assisted his guru.
Life in Music for Piu Sarkhel
Piu Sarkhel has bagged the prospect of being close to late Ustad Amir Khan since her childhood as he used to stay with them at Kolkata. As she has encountered with the training and style of Ustad Amir Khan, the traits of a tuneful voice has been instilled within her. Piu Sarkhel however developed the quality of moving voice in three octaves. Her training enabled her to hold a tremendous in depth knowledge of rhythm and command over taal and laya in Indian music. Piu Sarkhel has been executing her talent for the past 15 years and she has formulated her own distinct techniques in voice modulation.

Throughout India Piu Sarkhel has performed in highly esteemed concerts like Durgapur Music Conference in the year1985 ; Bhavanipur Sammelan in the year 1995 ; Sangeet Research Academy in the year 1998 ; NCPA in the year 2001 ; Haridas Sangeet Sammelan in the year 2002 ; Ustad Amir Khan Sammelan in the year 2002. Piu Sarkhel has worked with Gujarat Sangeet Natak Academy in their `research wing`. Piu Sarkhel has also conducted a voice-training workshop to her credit at Rajkot. As recognition to the talent of this astonishing personality, she has been conferred the Surmani award from Sur Singar Samsad, Mumbai. She has also released music albums with Times Music and T-Series.
